NCCC Offers Course on World Religions

The Continuing and Extended Studies Department at Northwestern CT Community College in Winsted is offering a unique course called "What Are They Thinking?" that will focus on world religions and how they address the issues affecting the world today. Each two-hour class in the eight-week series geared towards honoring our cultural, religious, gender, racial and economic differences will introduce one of the major world religions and how it addresses the problems of today.

The series will begin on Tuesday, March 4 with a presentation from 7-9 p.m. by Jim Highland, who teaches philosophy, religion and Asian studies in the philosophy department at the University of Hartford. His topic will be Buddhist Philosophy and the Contemporary World. Highland said, "I am not a Buddhist but I have found Buddhism very helpful in my life."

On Tuesday, March 11, Chet Makoski, a Baha'i, will present an Introduction to the Baha'i Faith and tell how Baha'is perceive the oneness of God and mankind. Makoski is owner of Donaldson Makoski, Inc., a graphic design consulting firm in Avon. He serves on the Regional Baha'i Council of the Northeastern States, an institution administering the affairs of the Baha'i Faith in New England, New York State, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He is a popular speaker on the Baha'i perspectives regarding the equality of men and women, the unity of religion and the oneness of humanity.

In the following weeks, Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, Judaism, Islam and Hinduism will be presented. A final session on April 22 to which all presenters are invited will review what has been learned during this series and how this knowledge helps to sustain us and help us to cope with issues of the 21st century.

To register, call the Continuing Education Dept. at 860-738-6444. You may enroll for any or several of the presentations at a cost of $10 per session, which includes yourself and a guest, or for the entire series at a cost of $49. Registrations must be made in advance.
