EAST CANAAN: The Northwestern CT Chapter of Church Women United sponsor a service for "World Day of Prayer, 2003" at 3 p.m. at the North Canaan Congregational Church on Route 44. This years theme is "Holy Spirit, Fill Us." The service of worship was prepared by Catholic, Evangelical and Orthodox Christian women of Lebanon. An offering will be taken during the service to support the ongoing work of Church Women United; there will also be a "least coin" offering of pennies that is traditional during CWU services. Following the service, there will be a time of refreshments and fellowship; the refreshments will be representative of Lebanese foods. AVON: Avon Interfaith Council holds its annual Interfaith Brunch at 11:30 a.m. at the Avon Middle School. Faith has reached a center stage in the public arena like never before. After the tragedy of 9/11, people of all faiths gathered together to pray for families who lost loved ones. President Clinton's "charitable choice" and President Bushs faith-based initiatives have meant that faith-based communities must become key collaborative partners in the provision of human services. And as we explore various aspects of global conflict, faith is the banner many world leaders hold while discussing why God is on their side. With all these matters in mind, Rev. Shelly D.B. Copeland will speak of "The Changing Place of Faith"; music will be provided by The Book Ends. Rev. Copeland is the first African-American and the first woman to hold the position of Executive Director of the Capitol Region Council of Churches. Co-hosts of this event are Avon Center Congregational Church and West Avon Congregational Church; admission is $5 adults, $3 students, free for pre-school children. CANAAN: Marine Corps League Detachment #042 holds its annual Scholarship Award Breakfast from 8 a.m.-noon at the Canaan VFW on Route 7. In recognition of National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, Pat Devendorf of the Bettor Choice Gambling Program at Wheeler Clinic will talk about different types of gamblers, signs of gambling problems, those at risk for developing these behaviors, and resources available to help compulsive gamblers and their families.
