Bluegrass on the Hill at Wamogo

Just Friends Bluegrass Band will perform as part of "Bluegrass on the Hill," an evening of traditional and second generation music on Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in the James Eisenhower Auditorium at Wamogo High School, Route 202 in Litchfield. The benefit event is sponsored by the Wamogo Choir for their trip later this spring.

Consisting of four members, Just Friends Bluegrass Band plays traditional, gospel and contemporary bluegrass music. Pieces are backed by hard driving banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and bass. The combination of two-, three- and four-part harmonies plus acoustic instrumentation gives Just Friends Bluegrass Band a well-rounded sound.

Jeff Greenwood began his musical avocation more than thirty years ago. He plays banjo, guitar and sings. For more than twenty years, he played banjo and sang with Wynn Fay and the Ridgerunners of Amherst, MA. His wife, Zoe, plays bass, sings and does the MC work. She began her musical career at age five on WHMP radio in Northampton, MA with her father, Wynn Fay. Dan Thomas plays mandolin, fiddle and guitar, and sings. He has been a musician for most of his life, playing in bands from Ohio, West Virginia and Massachusetts. Bruce White plays rhythm guitar and sings. He comes from a family rich in bluegrass, country and folk music.

Started in 1995, the band has shared its brand of bluegrass music, warmth and humor throughout southern New England at coffeehouses, festivals and private parties as well as in concerts on the green and at Torrington's First Night celebrations. A Message on Their Hearts, the band's first CD, has been received with warm accolades from fans throughout New England and the Northeast.

Rounding out the evening, Too Blue, a bluegrass/ swing band anchored in Woodbury, will also perform. This band also has four members and boasts Betsy Rome on guitar, Michael Sassano on mandolin, Jack Murphy on bass, and Joan Harrison on banjo. Close two-part female harmony, original bluegrass and swing are the signatures of Too Blue. The band has been praised for its "creative lyrics, musical artwork and playful arrangements" by guitarist Jim Hurst.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door, and refreshments will be available. For more info call 860-567-9182.
