Benefit Shebang for WAPJ Radio

WAPJ 89.9 FM, Torrington's community radio station (a division of the Nutmeg Conservatory of the Arts), will present "The Whole Shebang: An Arts, People and Joy Festival" in celebration of its 6th anniversary on Saturday, March 15. This wide-ranging variety show will be held at the Music Church, 59 Barber St. in Torrington, beginning with a kids' hour from 3-4 p.m.

Orrin Bolton will perform songs from his debut album, Freedom. Also appearing will be The Fables (an upbeat, rhythmic, folksy party band); Love at Work (warm, bluesy and traditional); Up in the Air (acoustic country blues); and David Maharg and the All-Stars (country swing).

Bass extraordinaire Linda Richmond will add an avant-garde twist, and so will members of 16 Tons, an experimental jam band from Warren. Spoken word will be provided by Steve Bellwood and poets Sandra Bishop Ebner, Cheryl DellaPelle and Alan DeLarm. The event will be rounded out with some other odds and ends of entertainment (a mime, a juggler, maybe accordions …).

WAPJ was originally housed at UConn-Torrington, and moved to its present location in the Nutmeg Building at 58 Main St. in Torrington in the fall of 2001. A non-commercial station, WAPJ relies on donations from its listeners for funding, and is also sponsored in part by several local businesses.

Station manager Sabrina Roper estimates WAPJ has over five thousand listeners. The station's long-term goals include being able to boost its signal in order to reach more of Litchfield County.

The station's format allows volunteer programmers the freedom to play a diversity of music, giving the public access to blues, jazz, country, zydeco, comedy, polka, Italian music, folk, reggae and rock. WAPJ also offers community programming such as local news, sports and weather, public service announcements, and a calendar of regional events. Feature shows include A Moment with the Mayor and Chamber Chat with JoAnn Ryan. For a program guide, go to <www.WAPJ.org>, or call 860-489-9033.

Admission to the benefit is a suggested donation of $10; for more info call 860-489-9033, or 860-480-3281. Parking is available at the Vogel School.
