Don't Let Them Brainwash You
By J. Gerard Dupre, Torrington

In response to "Let's Stand United" by Frank Marchion [March 7]: "No sane person likes war. No peace-loving American wants war." Those are your words. Then it's time to impeach Bush and move him to another country. Bush took an oath to protect and defend our Constitution. He has violated that by chopping at our rights. At this moment, yours and everybody else's are down the toilet. They can come to your house and take you away. They need not tell you, or anyone else, why. You are not allowed a lawyer. Is this the work of a sane person? It seems to me that Hitler used those same methods.

What does September 11 have to do with Iraq?

As a Vietnam veteran you had the luxury of thinking that no one loved you, except your family. As someone who saw action in World War II, all I ever thought about—and everyone else in that war who I've talked to has said the same—was that I wanted to come out of it alive. That was always in our minds, and we all did our jobs.

Bush petrifies many Americans and more people around the world; I think Hitler, Stalin and Amin all did the same. I think they all said they were doing what they did for security reasons.

Bush has taken us from a surplus to the debt of degradation. Poison our air, clear-cut our forests, cheat our children out of an education—all for the sake of the dollar. You think people around the world don't like us now; wait until after the Bush/ Iraq War.

The people of this nation do not really know what war is all about. They have never felt devastation, seen their friends' homes obliterated, hunted garbage cans or killed dogs and cats for food. We are indeed the best nation on earth. Our people enjoy more of the good things in life than anyone else. But people such as Bush—and let's not forget Lieberman—really know how to violate our rights.

I am an Independent, and have been every day of my life. The Democrats and Republicans rob my tax dollars to run their political fights in their own parties' primaries, and then their winners run in the general election—just don't let the Independent have a real choice. They send out two dogs that no one wants for everyone to vote for. They even try to make you feel inferior if you do not vote; that is what they call democracy.

Bush's choice words are "homeland security" and "terrorism," and to really put the squeeze on everyone, "patriotism." When I first heard Ashcroft utter some of those words, he scared the hell out of me like no one ever did before. I've lived well over 70 years and no one has ever made me feel as uncomfortable as he does. I do have feelings of terror, inside. These people took an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution, the greatest piece of paper this world has ever seen. Our Constitution is the only reason why the people of this world all want to live here.

Mr. Marchion, you sound like a good, caring man. I know you love this country as much as the rest of us do. Don't let them brainwash you. Think for yourself. In war fathers bury their sons; in peace sons bury their fathers. I want my sons and grandchildren to bury me.
