A Moment in Time
By Joe Cadrain, Winsted
On Friday, March 5, I was at the Batcheller School in Winsted to be a judge for an Invention Convention. This third-year project organized by Joel Nelson, a teacher at Batcheller School, is very interesting and informative, plus there are events that remain in our memories for a long time. The other judges were John Forrest, the mayor of our town, and Lori Smith, who sits with me on the Board of Education.
This is my second year being a judge at the Invention Convention, which I find very rewarding. This year was special because I was privileged to witness a very special event. One of the girls whose project I evaluated did not leave the room after having her project judged, as all the others had done. She stood very quiet until John Forrest, who has been giving his time to help improve her reading skills, had finished his evaluation of another entry and then went directly to him. They talked for a short time before John and the girl walked toward a few adults who were standing nearby. John, beaming with joy, gently placed his arm around the girl while explaining and showing us how much this girl meant to him.
For a moment in time they appeared to be alone; the room went silent but their faces were aglow with admiration for each other. The young girl took one step closer to John and said in the most sincere way, "I love you." Joy filled my heart, and I thank God that he allowed me to be there when he held them in the palm of his hand.
