Northwest Chamber's Read Aloud 2003
By Pamela F. Colavecchio

On behalf of the Batcheller School Community, I would like to recognize and thank the eighteen readers who took time from their businesses, community organizations, and individual schedules to personally demonstrate their commitment to being lifelong learners. They participated in the 13th annual Northwest Connecticut Read Aloud 2003, sponsored by the Northwest Connecticut Chamber of Commerce and Howmet-Alcoa Corporation of Winsted.

The readers were Sandra Gagnon and Jackie Mancino of Howmet; Wayne Ellsworth of Beardsley and Memorial Library; Alan Colavecchio of Colavecchio Design; Rose Rovero of Northwest Community Bank; Dom Campi of Command Realty; Sgt. Kevin Kinahan of the Winchester Police Department; Maureen Prelli of Tangarone & Prelli Insurance; Chelsea Tiscner of Explorations Charter School; Beverly Chrzan of Northwestern Connecticut Community College; Dana Forchette of the University of Connecticut; Melissa Lloyd of Vibra-Conn, Inc.; Scott Porter of Northwestern Regional High School Honor Society; Cheryl DePaoli of Northwestern Regional High School; Rosemary Drescher of the Northwest Area Girl Scouts; librarian Elizabeth Lavernoich; retired Winchester School System teacher Grace Jones; and Don Kellogg, retired media specialist of the Torrington School System.

Enthusiastic comments by the students filled the air long after the Read Aloud concluded. They were interested not only in hearing the story, but also were excited to learn more about the readers. Due to the requests of many children, some readers already have agreed to return later this year to continue the literacy experience begun with the Read Aloud. Each of the books selected for the Read Aloud can be enjoyed forever by the students, as they were donated to the individual classroom libraries by the Chamber of Commerce.

Pamela F. Colavecchio is Reading and Language Arts Consultant at Batcheller School in Winsted.
