A Special Blessing
By Florence Vining Thomen, East Canaan
For days it had been cloudy, stormy, windy, and unpleasant in every way. The wind kept buffeting the house, roaring all night through the valley beyond. There seemed to be a chill in the air, even with the heat turned up more than usual. Would it never end, this sleet and snow, then warmer days of steady rain—and mud in the bare spots? The trees stood naked with no signs of returning life, just bending and swaying to the onslaught of Nature at her worst. Tempers flared; didn't anyone have a cheerful word for other folks anymore? All were expounding about the weather and complaining—would it never end, and spring come? What a long winter, so inconvenient, so exasperating! Please, God, please!
And then the sun peeped through those gray, turbulent clouds. The sun—even the first tiny burst of brightness, the sudden reaction, the joy of sunshine, even for those brief moments! A bit of blue sky forced its way through the density of that leaden sky and the world took on an entirely fresh and hopeful demeanor. What a world of difference a ray of brightness makes to the human heart. Thank you, God, for the special blessing of sunshine, and the promise of better things to come. Spring is on the way!
