Medieval Banquet to Benefit Trinity Arts Series
For the guests at Trinity Arts Series' annual Medieval Banquet, the royal sound of sackbuts (predecessors of the trombone) will herald a lively procession of singers, dancers and musicians as they enter the hall to begin the festivities. Welcoming the diners will be the evening's King and Queen, well-known actor and narrator (and TV's most recent Captain Kangaroo) John McDonough, and Shakespearean professor and actress Ruth Anne Baumgartner.
Last year's banquet-goers raved about the six-course authentic Medieval-style meal, complaining only that there was too much food! This year caterer Kathleen Durbois, owner of The Banqueting Table in Canton, is planning a Celtic theme with authentic dishes like Scottish cakes and ale, tweed kettle (poached salmon with sauce), pork tart with red cabbage, and Cornish saffron cake with toasted almond pudding.
Featured entertainment for the evening includes a variety of music and dance groups. The nine members of Everyman Guild sing and play an intriguing selection of period instruments, from sackbut, recorder and crumhorn to lute and viol da gamba. Black Pond Consort will perform various madrigals, while Paul Halley, Trinity's Music Director and prize-winning keyboardist/ composer, will play a harpsichord-like instrument, a virginal designed and built by Carl and Mary Lee Dudash of Norfolk. Dressed in their traditional garb and adorned with bells and scarves, the New Haven Morris Men will bring their lively dances and sword show as a highlight of the feast. Guests will have a chance to join in Medieval-style country dances, led by Matilda Giampetro of Everyman Guild.
This annual fundraiser for the Trinity Arts Series begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 22 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 220 Prospect St. in Torrington. Tickets are $75 per person, or $60 per person for groups of ten or more; for reservations call 860-482-4411. Period costumes are optional.
