The Label's in the Mail

By Ursula B.G. Kilner, Salisbury

A letter from one of my many Illinois cousins recently included the question: "Do you get a lot of return address labels in your mail—the 'letters' looking for donations? I have so many return address labels that I could, I'm sure, paper all the walls of one of my rooms!"

I had to answer Janet that I too have had hundreds of return labels to put on letters I write or bills I have to pay. The labels come in with different wordings—but all, obviously, are for my use. Despite the variations in address, they all agree I live in Salisbury, which is a plus. They come in all colors, some with flowers and some with flags (American), some with plain gold or silver lettering (unfortunately, neither the gold nor silver can be translated into spendable currency). The variety of return address labels boggles my mind!

The number of sheets of return labels I have received just got out of hand and my writing table (once the dining room table) became littered with them. I gave in. No, I did not paper any walls with them, although I was tempted. Sitting quietly, however, in the corner lurked a punch bowl. The return stamp labels got transferred to the bowl, freeing at least a third of my writing area—a relief! Now I pick and choose which return label I use depending on the projected recipient.

Little do the label printers know I have received mail addressed to, among others: "Ursula Blanche, Salisbury, CT." That might give the label printers even more ideas!
