Winsted Elks Celebrate 100 Years
By Debbie L. Angell, Winsted
Winsted Elks Lodge #844 will soon be celebrating 100 years of service to our community. Wednesday, April 23 is the lodge's official 100th anniversary date. On that day the lodge will honor its oldest 50 members, followed by a special initiation of new members. (If you are interested in joining the Elks, stop by the lounge and speak to a member.)
On Friday, May 2 the lodge will honor area children, along with their parents, who have won the local lodge contests for the hoop shoot, drug awareness and Americanism. It will also announce the high school seniors who are the recipients of the lodge scholarships this year.
On Saturday, May 3 the lodge will host a formal town-wide ball at Crystal Peak on Torrington Rd. in Winsted. Tickets for the dinner-dance are now available at the lodge for $35 each. Please get your tickets early (adults only), as this is sure to be a sell-out event.
Many other events are scheduled, some of which include participation in the Pet Parade with a large float honoring the winners of our lodge’s soccer and hoop shoot, drug awareness and Americanism essay contests, scholarship recipients, and members' children. After the parade, the lodge will host an open house. The lodge will again sponsor the annual kids' Fishing Derby at Tatro’s Pond on Sunday, May 18. And a Flag Day celebration is currently being planned for the town green on Saturday, June 14.
Lodge members are assembling a very special 100th anniversary book, which will include a brief history of the lodge's past 100 years, including the "Flood of 55" with photos. Did you know that when the flood occurred, the Elks opened their home to several local businesses? The Elks gladly continue to assist the needs of our town. If you would like to be a sponsor of this special anniversary book, please call me at 379-5172 to place an ad. Deadline for submissions is soon approaching.
