Sunday, March 30

CANTON: Canton Public Library, 40 Dyer Ave. hosts a presentation by Children in Placement from 2-4 p.m. The mission of Children in Placement is to facilitate effective judicial review of children and families involved in court proceedings where neglect and abuse are alleged. The organization trains volunteers to serve as advocates for abused and neglected children. As the court-appointed advocate for a child, the volunteer’s job is to talk with those involved in a child’s case and help the judge determine the course of action that is best for the child. Cassandra Porcaro-Roach, a Coordinator with Children in Placement who works with the Superior Court, Juvenile Matters in Torrington, will be available to show a brief (7-minute) video and to answer questions about the program. WINSTED: Friends of Main Street host a reception from 6-8 p.m. at the Gilson Theatre, 354 Main St. The reception will include a short presentation designed to present the results of the Winsted Shoppers Survey, unveiling of the organization's logo, and introduction of the public to the Friends' recently approved CEDF grant for commercial façade improvement. The reception will also provide an opportunity to become acquainted with the organization's new executive director, Barbara DeBellis. TORRINGTON: United Way of Northwest CT hosts its first annual Volunteer Recognition Reception from 5-7 p.m. at the Cornucopia Banquet Hall. The purpose of this new event is to recognize corporations and individuals who truly help the United Way of Northwest CT and lead the way for a more caring community. Wednesday, April 2

BRISTOL: The Mothers of Multiples of Greater Bristol meet at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 31 Maple St. This meeting will be the group’s 2003 Convention preparation; a general meeting will be held first, and then raffle baskets will be assembled during socializing with old and new members. There will be hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. This club is a support group for mothers of twins, triplets and higher order multiples; new members are always welcome. HARWINTON: Harwinton Women’s Club meets at 7 p.m. at the Senior Center on Weingart Rd. Paul Carrier will present a program on bluebirds. Patch-makers are requested to submit their completed American Barn Quilt patches at this meeting.

BANTAM: Veteran of the Month services will be conducted at 10 a.m. by American Legion Tyler-Seward-Kubish Post 44 at the All Wars Memorial on Route 202. First the flag of Korean War Airman 2nd Class Robert Meo will be retired. Then the burial flag of World War II Army Technical Sergeant Nicholas A. The program is designed for persons living with illness; presenters will be Father Thomas Poth, SMM, Patricia Torre, DW and Joan Myers. The session will include quiet conversation, guided imagery, ritual and prayers to comfort and strengthen those suffering with illness.
