Why?
By Pauline Fancher, Winsted
I am asking this question not for myself alone, but also for one who is very dear to me.
The calendar, in some instances, mentions a season of Lent, a time when Christians examine in depth the measure of how well or how poorly they have followed the teachings of the master instructor, who was born to bring the Word of God to those who would listen. It is supposed to be a quiet time for rest, renewal, growth, and study of the Bible as we review the words of our Heavenly Father and our leader, Jesus. Here we read the word "Why" very often, and it challenges us to find out "why," too.
Jesus wants to know why His followers call him "Lord, Lord," but don't do what He says to do. He wants to know why we are quick to see a speck in another's eye, but do not see the huge beam in our own.
He taught us to bear one another's burdens and to love our neighbors as much as ourselves. Many of us do, and will keep on trying. Jesus must wonder why many others have not learned the way to peace through His word after 2,000 years have passed.
Now, after 2,000 years we are asking why we must devise evil-looking weapons to outsmart the forces of evil in the world, when Jesus confronted the devil with the words: "It is written." Later He said: "Heaven and Earth shall pass away, but My Word will not pass away." As soon as possible we must show the world that we know that hate begets hate and love overcomes fear and hate, and only love will be in power when hate and fear are long gone.
