I Will Remember
By Paul Norton, Hartford
The days have come
to awaken all within,
Dreams about America
and the flag.
How do we hold these truths
self-serving the few?
People who know the power
of the proud: Who only knew?
I believe in things
like talking and standing—
We have to hear the band.
It's a worthy cause,
It's our land.
(They took away our freedom,
I will remember.)
I will remember last night,
tuned in my TV—
Where was Bill Moyers?
Nowhere to be seen.
Shortwave radio
the only thing
far across the sea—
So far, so good,
the signal not jammed.
How am I to think,
being blind,
not free?
My faith in democracy
has been lost
at what a greater cost?
The papers will not talk facts
why lawmakers
support new Acts.
Rules have been changed
to protect the press.
The government fringe
Has taken away access.
I'd like to show support,
stand up today.
I've heard about the police,
how they view the fray.
My heart is breaking
over this oppression,
the good-ole USA.
(They took away our freedom,
I will remember.)
The college I now attend,
my computer account fixed—
I will remember the information
they tried to keep away.
Communication shut down
pretty much the way
Our government, our warriors
Green, blue, and grey—
How will we keep our freedoms?
It must be said today:
They took away our freedom.
