This letter is in support of Eleanor Woike for Treasurer of the Town of Harwinton. Ellie has been the Town Treasurer for the better part of 18 years. Although she was defeated in two elections, she was asked to come back both times to complete the terms when the elected person couldn't do or didn't want the position. Let's just keep her in office this time! More ... I am pleased to be a candidate for the Town of Harwinton Zoning Commission on the Democratic ticket with John Byrnes for Selectman. It is for John that I speak. More ... For the last ten years, Marie Knudsen has been Harwinton's First Selectman. Those ten years have seen Harwinton blossom as a lovely country town in which to live. Marie cares deeply about her town, and her five previous terms as First Selectman give her the edge needed to keep Harwinton special for all of us. More ... I have returned to Harwinton for a visit and have some observations to share as a former resident. Coming from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, one of the fastest-growing areas of the nation, I find Harwinton a refreshing respite from the fast lane of life. To be sure, Harwinton has grown in the four years that I have been gone, but the growth is subtle and well-integrated within rural town living. I see improvements in bridges, road safety, historic preservation, the golf course—all of which contribute to the integrity of this town. I don't see sprawling shopping malls, crowded housing developments, and the super highways of Myrtle Beach. More ... Please don't tell anyone how much I love my town. Or how special it is to live here. Or how proud I am of the lifestyle I lead in northwestern Connecticut. Or about the simplicity of the country and the natural beauty that is all around me. We have flowers and open spaces, friendly and helpful neighbors, excellent highway maintenance teams and emergency response services. More ... Ellie Woike has served Harwinton for over 18 years as its Treasurer. During that time she has earned in excess of $2.1 million in interest on town deposits. Our most recently completed year shows over $200,000 in interest income. More ... Marie Knudsen's opponents say it is time for a change. A change for the better? A change that is long overdue? What kind of change? I say change is good when necessary, but not just for its own sake. More ... As an active member of the Lake Harwinton Association, I have had several occasions to contact the First Selectman's office. I can honestly say that Marie Knudsen has always been responsive. If she was not available at the moment, she always returned my call in a timely manner. More ... Only now, after more than fifteen years, is the State of Connecticut taking action to alleviate the water contamination problem from the polluted Mitral site by providing city water from Torrington to the affected residents, and conducting site cleanup trials and monitoring of the polluted area. Where have Harwinton's leaders and administrators been? Who has advocated for Harwinton? First Selectwoman Marie Knudsen has held office for ten of those years. The quiet on this issue over the past decade has been deafening! More ... |
