Long Since Time for a Change

By Lloyd T. Shanley, Jr., Harwinton

The letters of praise from state politicians for the performance of Harwinton's First Selectperson, Marie Knudsen, are now making their usual appearance in the newspapers of our area. They are of the type of letter that must be kept on file in Hartford, for general use when requested by local candidates of the "right party" at election time.

In one letter Marie is praised for "her quiet and forceful leadership style" and for "working seven days a week, on behalf of the people she represents." It is stated in another that "she is a true leader, who inspires town employees to perform their duties," and that "… she does not hesitate when tough decisions have to be made." One can not get any further from the truth than these statements do!

Obviously the state politicians who allow their names to be used in these letters know little or nothing of Marie Knudsen's performance as a selectperson, other than what she would have them believe.

During the past decade, it has been the dedicated veteran workers in the Selectmen's and Highway Supervisor's offices who have filled the vacuum created by Marie's tardiness, frequent absences, and her vacillating with decision making until she determines the way the "wind is blowing." In truth, it is often the employees who find it necessary to make excuses for her, and take over duties that are historically and by state statutes those of the person elected to be the Town's First Selectman.

In spite of (or because of) Ms. Knudsen's fascinating personality, public relations and acting abilities, and the accomplishments of others that she takes credit for, it has long since been time for a change in Harwinton's elected leadership!

Mr. Shanley is a retired First Selectman of the Town of Harwinton.
