A Charming Town that Changes Little By Thomas T.T. Telman, Harwinton Some Harwinton residents would have us believe that we need a change. The most recent change I've seen around these parts is the addition of a new bake shop at the town center. Harwinton is a town that thrives on tradition, family values, and country life. Most residents, myself included, highly value living in a charming town that changes very little. In fact, though, I can think of an instance where change in required in Harwinton. The intersection of Route 4 with Locust and Harmony Hill Roads has a dangerous blind spot that hides vehicles for long periods. Both entering and leaving Route 4 is hazardous, and has in the past resulted in a death and some accidents. The State of Connecticut has budgeted to eliminate this blind spot by altering the dip in the road. I would expect this project to be heartily endorsed by those looking for change. But not so fast—there are residents who are dead-set against any alterations to the roads, even after the State agreed to modify original plans to absolutely minimize aesthetic and environmental impact to the area. It just goes to show that you really can't please all of the people no matter how hard you try. So it would appear that change is needed in Harwinton only when it is "not in my backyard" or, in this particular case, front yard. Our incumbents, on the other hand, don't have a hidden agenda and love to serve their town. I say, elect the Knudsen-Scarpelli Republican team. |
