It appears that one reason Noel F. Ambery does not believe in God is that God allows tragedies to happen [The Epitome of All Mysteries, October 19]. He wonders, if God were actually in existence, why he "never prevented the disasters of September 11." Well, God does not cause airplanes to crash into buildings. God did not build the airplanes. He did not build the towers. And he did not plan the loss of life and property. The disasters were caused by human beings, however misguided. More ... The recent letters in The Voice on education have been very interesting and informative. I have enjoyed all of them. I especially enjoyed Matthew P. Valenti's attempt to compare the respect level for babysitters and teachers. Luckily, Tom Bado was able to set this one straight [Advocating True Education Reform, October 12]. I must agree, babysitters do not get paid $5 per hour per child. They typically get paid $5, or maybe even $6, per hour—period. The logic used to multiply out the average class size by the babysitter's hourly rate is amusing, at best. I think this is an insult to teachers. More ... Canton is fortunate to have Mary Tomolonius as a candidate for First Selectman. Mary is a long-time Canton resident who has lived here for many years with her husband of 27 years, Gary. They have raised three children, all of whom have flourished in the Canton school system. For the past fifteen years, Mary has been the owner of a small, successful business. She owns several rental properties. As a taxpayer, parent and businesswoman, she understands the need for fiscal prudence and recognizes that many residents are on fixed incomes. At the same time, she is sensitive to the needs of our families and mindful that our children are the community's most important asset. More ... Jeff Messenger "admit(s) to the doubting Thomas within (himself)" and asserts that "While the marvels of the universe inspire awe and wonder, they do very little to define the nature of God—if there is a God." And so he "started to look for possible divine fingerprints wherever (he) could." His quest led him to study "comparative religion, Christian apologetics, biblical archeology, prophetic fulfillments, the paranormal, the near-death experience, and the unexplained in general." [Lunch with the Warrens, September 14] More ... Due to misinformation I had received, my recent comments in response to Mr. Bob Davidson [Bad Movie in Canton, October 26] incorrectly stated that he owned an auto dealership on Route 44 in Canton. I regret the comments I made regarding the Davidsons of Davidson Chevrolet, and I sincerely apologize for any confusion my statements may have caused. More ... It is a freedom cycle: Though sometimes stopped temporarily, inevitably we spring back with indomitable spirit. More ... I'm writing this letter of thanks to one woman in Torrington who's a friend, a mother, a neighbor, and a great support. This woman's name is Joyce Bisciotti. From the first day that we met she's given me the best gift that anyone could ever give—she's given me friendship, she's given me love and support, and she's given me the chance to realize that life's difficult but definitely possible. She’s helped me understand that being different is not a crime or bad, but a gift that remains unknown. She taught me that our society makes its mistakes and has its downfalls, but that nevertheless we're all on this earth to complete a task—and that task is to live life with great joy and to forgive, but not forget, the wrongs of others as we just do our best to be good citizens. More ... Is it my imagination, or was this fall the most beautiful one we have had in years? As I write this, it is the last week in October, and so many colored leaves are still hanging on. Our old Japanese maple in the backyard is really putting on a show with its leaves turning a fuchsia red, as if it knew that was my favorite color. More ... I would like to remind everyone to get out and vote on November 6 for Debra Brydon, the incumbent treasurer of the Town of Barkhamsted. I have known Debbie since she was a little girl growing up in Pleasant Valley, and she has been my neighbor for the past fifteen years. During those fifteen years she has always been an active member in the community and volunteer. She has been the town treasurer for the past year, and was hired because of her financial background, her enthusiasm and work ethic. More ... I have never personally attacked anyone in this publication. In recent letters Tom Bado has attacked me personally, and then accuses me of doing the same with my "dark side." I do not have the time to stoop to this kind of juvenile activity with a person who has an obvious "persecution complex." More ... |
