Vote "Yes" on Charter Question

Vote "Yes" on Charter Question

By David G. LaPointe, Winsted

Tuesday, November 6 is Election Day. Winchester voters need to vote for candidates for public office. But more importantly, voters should vote on the charter question.

The Democrats in Winchester are supporting the change in the town's charter question. The Republicans are not. By voting "Yes" the people of Winchester are gaining more control in the town's budget process. Presently, the town has a town meeting to either approve or reject the budget. A "yes" vote would expand voter participation by having all-day and evening voting at Pearson Junior High School. Absentee ballots for people not able to attend the voting session would be allowed. A "yes" vote will assure more citizens access and participation when dealing with the people's money (taxes) and the town's budget. If the Winchester Republicans have their way, the budgets will continue to pass unchecked by a majority of the taxpayers who pay the bills, and we will ultimately pay higher taxes.

As a Democratic candidate for the Winchester Board of Education, I will work for the best interests of the education of our children and the taxpayers. I don't believe money is the answer to all our problems in education. As a board member I will look at appropriate answers and solutions to problems that the town is faced with. I will be up to the task of making appropriate cuts where cuts need to be made, and increases where we need to increase. As a Board of Education member I will embrace educational responsibility, along with fiscal responsibility. The Republicans have controlled this town for six years. I believe it's time for a change. I hope voters give the Democratic team and me a chance to serve. Now it's up to you to vote.
