Roasting Chestnuts For those of you who would attempt to roast chestnuts to enjoy at table after a sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner (or at any time), be advised that a plentiful supply of imported chestnuts are available at most markets during the holiday seasons. Roasting chestnuts is rather easily accomplished: Gash an "X" just through the leathery domed shell of each nut and place as many as will fit within a standard size pie plate. Add several tablespoons of water, cover with any all-metal pot cover and place into the oven for fifteen to twenty minutes at 350 degrees. Test for doneness at fifteen minutes. The roasted nuts will peel easily while still hot and at their tastiest. Perusal of any respectable cookbook will reveal a number of fine recipes using nutmeats. You may very well find several recipes for a chestnut stuffing for your Thanksgiving turkey. Bon Appetit. |
