Sierra Club’s Greater Hartford Group sponsors a 6-MILE HIKE on Saturday, December 1 (rain date is December 2) at 10:30 a.m. at the White Memorial Foundation, Route 202 in Litchfield. Active Singles sponsors a HIKE at Northford Park in Northford on Sunday, December 2 at 9:30 a.m. Bring hiking boots and water; there will be four different skill levels. For singles only (ages 30s-50s), no children or dogs; new members are welcome. Optional brunch to follow 2-hour hike. Outing Club offers a HIKE at Platt Park in Southbury followed by a potluck supper on Sunday, December 2. The group is also planning a weekend trip to OKEMO MOUNTAIN in Vermont for downhill and cross country skiing, snow boarding and snowshoeing on Friday through Sunday, January 25-27. All single and married persons and youth (grade 6 and older) are welcome at Outing Club activities, which are non-alcohol, non-smoking, and no pets. Sharon Audubon Center, Route 4 in Sharon presents BIRDS IN WINTER on Thursday, December 6 at 7 p.m. at the Audubon Center. Ellen Martinsen will show slides produced by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and discuss general bird identification, tricky bird identification, irruptions (remember the snowy owl sightings in Litchfield County last winter?), choosing a feeder, what foods are best, avian diseases, and data collection. This program is appropriate for any level of bird-watching experience.
