Torrington Symphony Winter Concert

The Torrington Symphony, under the baton of conductor Charles Fidlar, will perform a Winter Concert on Sunday, January 6 at 3 p.m. at the Torrington Middle School. This concert is the last of a series of three presented by the symphony to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Since its inception, the symphony has served both Torrington and the greater Litchfield County area, working to enhance appreciation of arts and increase community involvement. The symphony, which includes professional musicians as well as volunteers and semi-professionals, welcomes donations and is pleased to announce that they were recently awarded a grant by the Torrington Foundation for Public Giving.

Included in the program on January 6 will be selections by Connecticut's own composer, Leroy Anderson. The symphony will perform two of Anderson's works: "Sleigh Ride" and "Christmas Festival." Ralph Vaughn Williams' "Fantasia on Christmas Carols" will feature the Connecticut Yankee Chorale performing with the symphony, with Pat Niver as soloist. The major work on the program will be the New England premiere performance of a suite from the opera "Christmas Eve" by Rimsky-Korsakov. The suite tells the story of the flight of a magic carpet across a frozen lake to a grand, palatial ball. Festive sounds of Hanukkah arranged by Bill Holcomb will also be heard, as well as pieces by such composers as Morton Gould, Julie Styne, Sammy Cahn and Tchaikovsky.
