More than an Oversight
About two months ago, I informed you of what I thought was just mismanagement or an oversight in the renovation process at Torrington High School, which had resulted in a significant waste of taxpayer money [Mysterious Sale at Torrington High, November 23]. I can update you at this time to let you know that it was MUCH more than that. Less than ten days ago, a male voice on my answering machine left quite a message regarding the selling off of this equipment, and implicated a few co-workers as well. I now know that this caller also works at Torrington High School. I called a Torrington police officer, which resulted in two detectives coming to my house to hear and record information from my machine. I did earlier speak to both a local attorney who is overseeing the project, as well as school board member Margaret Chadwick. Ms. Chadwick did not have any time for me and seemed unconcerned regarding the issue. Out of the 25-plus items of restaurant/ kitchen equipment that I saw at the school (and which were allegedly being thrown away), the item that I had put on my vehicle brought more than $1,199 when sold to a fellow out in Chicago. At this time, I do not have a final conclusion, as this matter is now being investigated by the Torrington Police Department. I can tell you that this was more than just stupidity! The person who left the message on my machine called me a few days ago and said that he might be losing his job (because he left a few people’s names on my answering machine). It seems to me that while he should not be losing his job, perhaps a few other people should be! I will be asking for a report from Torrington’s finest, and I will follow up once they complete their investigation. I still want to know where the sinks went! |
