A Slippery Mess

By Lloyd T. Shanley, Jr., Harwinton

Ever since George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were chosen to be the candidates for president and vice president, I have felt an uneasy concern that bringing such "energy people" into high office within the federal government could result in a slippery (as in oil) mess.

It now appears that the concern was warranted. The failure of Enron Corporation, the large energy outfit, is bringing to light that several people in very high places in government (insiders?) were informed of the pending corporate disaster. They were thus able to bail out in advance of countless pension owners and other fellow stockholders.

Even if the current attempts to "cover up" are successful, this whole thing still brings to mind stories of the Teapot Dome scandal of the ‘20s and such. It should also finally place the importance the old tales of "dalliance in the White House" into proper perspective.
