The Wolf Moon

By Florence Vining Thomen, East Canaan

I'm sure you know that each full moon is given a name—Harvest Moon, Hunter's Moon, etc. Did you know that on January 28, the full moon will be the Wolf Moon? I am intrigued by that name and wonder if, in Indian folklore, it indicated the time when that beautiful big full moon, as it sailed so regally across the great azure arch on a clear, cold January night, somehow had a special message for the king of the forest, the majestic wolf. Was that when the pack sent up a mighty chorus of unearthly response in praise of the lunar glory? Is there an affinity there—a special kinship with the lord of the northern forests?

My special desire is to be a part of that nocturnal spectacle, the Wolf Moon, as it rises over my mountain on that night and, hopefully, share with someone special the eerie chant of my friends, the coyotes. Won't you join me?
