There has been much written for a few years concerning the Winchester Alternate High School and what the future will be for its existing programs. Officially this is not a school for students requiring special education, but rather a school that offers another method of teaching. Our alternate school is a 7th to 12th grade school that had 23 students last year. Special education is a far different subject that includes serious student problems that each school district must deal with. Basically we have little to no control over special education costs, thanks to education unions combined with those empowered to pass mandates upon those who must scratch for the dollars. More ... Alesia Vaccari and Todd Hiller, senior students at the Gilbert School and Northwestern Regional High School # 7, respectively, were recently awarded the DAR Good Citizen Certificate of Honor by the Greenwoods Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution in a ceremony held at the Beardsley and Memorial Library in Winsted. More ... Five years ago the Winsted Health Center opened for business in the building that was once the Winsted Memorial Hospital. There was joy and hope in the community. Joy that vital medical services were once again available in Winsted: an emergency room open for 16 hours a day, along with radiology and laboratory services, and cardiac rehabilitation. And the hope was that the Center would add services to such an extent that eventually an acute care hospital with in-bed patient care would become feasible. More ... Stacie Nicholas, Director of Operations at the Northwest YMCA, accepts a check for $75,000 from Christopher Pitt, President and CEO of Northwest Community Bank. The money will be used to replace windows (similar to the ones in the photo) on the YMCA’s second and third floors, which house facilities for a women’s emergency shelter and low-cost residences for the homeless.
