Comprehending the Impossible

I watched in awe
As it rose, girder by girder,
Never anticipating
Such terrible murder
Would occur right here
In our beloved city,
Causing anguish and tears
By Robert E. Sparrow, NYC and Torrington

I watched in awe
As it rose, girder by girder,
Never anticipating
Such terrible murder
Would occur right here
In our beloved city,
Causing anguish and tears

And mourning and pity.

The memory of seeing

Those planes as they appeared—

The fireballs, in our minds

Are indelibly seared.

Then the impossible occurred—

The towers' collapse

Forever altering

The city's maps.

So many lives

That really mattered—

So many families

Unalterably shattered—

And heroes, patriots,

A Mayor who shines—

Unspeakable maniacs,

Difficult to find—

But, essentially,

We all feel violated.

Let's hope the bloodlust

Of the terrorists is abated.

We'll persevere,

Our destiny fulfilled

As soon as those monsters'

Lives are stilled.
