Howitzer Is Part of Our History

Howitzer Is Part of Our History By Raymond Rivera, Harwinton

The 155mm howitzer is a big part of our country's history. Like it or not (and I have read comments indicating the howitzer is a symbol of "destruction and death"), our country enjoys freedoms today because brave men and women have used and continue to use these symbols of "destruction and death" to preserve those freedoms.

But when it's time to look at these symbols of freedom, some would rather keep them out of sight, tucked away in some far-off corner, as if they do not even exist. It appears political correctness is sweeping the land with no concern whatsoever for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Keep the howitzer where it is as a symbol of our patriotism and in support of all our military, many of whom are in harm’s way today around the world and on our soil fighting terrorism. The howitzer is part of our history, as much a part as the "Victorian Era" park which is being planned for Coe Park.

As a member of the 65th Infantry, my father can attest to the use of the howitzer and its role during the Korean conflict.
