On Sunday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m., the Canton Public Library, 40 Dyer Ave. in Canton holds a very special event celebrating the history of the Irish in America. Dr. Edmund B. Sullivan will speak on some true "characters" and events pertaining to interesting but perhaps lesser known Irish in our history. Dr. Sullivan has written several books regarding the topic and is responsible for for developing the Political Museum of American Heritage at the University of Hartford. More ... Coughlin has been with us in previous years and was the top choice for a pre-St. Patrick's Day celebration and potluck supper on Tuesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. More ... For anyone young or old who is enthralled by the magic of puppets, the place to be on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9 is Torrington. The first annual Puppet Festival will feature a gala puppet parade, performances for children and adults, and a host of puppeteering workshops for adults and families. It will showcase Connecticut's exceptional roster of talented puppeteers; the University of Connecticut is the only school in the country offering a masters degree in puppetry, and the Connecticut Guild of Puppetry has over 30 members. The festival will be held at the Warner Theatre, the beautifully restored 1931 movie palace noted for its art deco designs, magnificent star-shaped chandelier and murals of historic sites in the Litchfield Hills. The weekend will include a discussion on the impact of war on women hosted by the Berkshire County Chapter of UNIFEM; a roundtable on feminist strategies of peacemaking; small-group workshops on poetry, songwriting and storytelling as forms of activism; a screening of the film Warrior Marks; and will culminate with an evening concert of songs for peace.
