More on the John Birch Society
I wish William Barrante [The Constitution and Threats to America, February 22] had viewed the John Birch website <www.jbs.org>, which I cited in my recent article [Understanding the John Birch Society, February 15], rather than quoting something that may or may not be true or might be taken out of context. Maybe on that same website he could find information about the quote he attributed to Robert Welch ["Dwight David Eisenhower is a conscious agent of the communist conspiracy"] and the context in which it was spoken, if it was even said at all. It is obvious that half-truths and so-called quotes have been used to discredit just about every group of people at one time or another.

St. Patrick's Day provides everyone with an opportunity to celebrate the rich Irish heritage. As many of us here in Litchfield County toast St. Patrick on March 17, Dwan and Company would like to take a moment to salute the millions who make designated drivers part of their party plans.

They participated in the 12th annual Northwest Connecticut Read Aloud 2002, sponsored by the Northwest CT Chamber of Commerce and Howmet-Alcoa Corporation of Winsted.

I can’t imagine that anyone is in favor of carnage and death on the highways generated by alcohol consumption, so why are there even two sides to the discussion? There has to be some other reason. Can it be that this is another example where one side of the position believes that a tightening of a regulation that did not get the results we all hoped for will solve the problem, while the other side argues just because they are against more regulations in general?

A Few Words on Religious Awareness …
A few words on religious awareness vs. engaged celebration of religious (or even secular) holidays: The American way of freedom and respect may necessitate limiting what happens during the public school day. However, other public areas, and the school’s after-hours, may also provide more opportunities to celebrate holidays or other events under our right to the freedom to assemble.

Enough Is Enough
Ray Pavlak has repeatedly misstated facts regarding the Winsted Health Center Foundation. It is a disingenuous strategy to repeat an inaccuracy in the hope that it takes on a truth of its own. This relentless misinformation campaign and barrage of name-calling by the Pavlaks is not a substitute for facts and accuracy.
