I’ve been stewing about the Enron affair ever since the media gradually worked it into the general public’s consciousness out of the murky world of Wall Street manipulations. What is evident about the affair is that thousands of working people lost the whole of their retirement savings in a manner typical of the Savings and Loan skullduggery of the 1980s and the banking and business failures of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Forty-three percent of American parents report spanking or hitting their child within the last 12 months, 37% report insulting or swearing at their child, and 2% report having kicked, bitten or punched their child. More than 3 million children were reported to child protective service agencies as alleged victims of child abuse or neglect in 1998, and approximately 1 million of these reports were confirmed.
