Never Mind Welfare Reform

By Keith M. Rauh, Torrington

Politicians and government officials are always conjuring up ways to reform the welfare system in this country. They are also always finding creative ways to raise taxes. The public knows to expect this even though almost every political campaign promises they will maintain the current levels or even cut taxes.

This country annually must raise billions of dollars in tax revenue but consistently has a national debt. Some of you may wonder, as I do, why this is. Well, the sad fact is that we are giving this money to countries that are in need of aid. Why doesn't our government have the common decency to help its own people first? If the U.S. government would stop aiding these countries, we quite possibly could solve the majority of our domestic problems. Afghanistan alone received upwards of $175 million in aid last year—even though, until recently, that country harbored terrorists. Why are we not using this money to combat homelessness, assist families in need, fight substance abuse, reduce unemployment and provide low-cost or no-cost health insurance to every person in this country?

I think it's about time we all did something to get this country to give back what is ours. So is it really welfare reform we need, or is it government reform?
