Solar, Geothermal and Hydroelectric Energy Tour
An "energy-crafted home," this 2,200-square foot house in Pomfret is a new 19th century adaptation of a Greek Revival design. Its practical geothermal system uses a 500-foot well, providing heat for a forced hot air system in the winter and cool air in the summer, in addition to supplying hot water for household use. Other features include excellent insulation, energy-saving windows, a water-saving Asko washer and an air-lock entry.
Three unusual passive solar homes, an apartment complex with a large solar electric system, a home that uses geothermal energy, and a hydroelectric plant will be featured during a solar tour on Saturday, May 18 in northeastern Connecticut. The self-guided tour, sponsored by People's Action for Clean Energy (PACE), will run from noon-5 p.m. in the Pomfret, Mansfield and Willimantic areas. A solar van, two gas/ electric hybrid cars, extensive literature, and opportunities for bird walks, wine tasting and visiting historic sites will also be available.
Energy-efficient features abound in these buildings, among them solar hot water, air-lock entries, low-e argon-filled windows, set-back thermostats, radiant floor heat, a Swedish fireplace, superior insulation and compact fluorescent lighting. The hydroelectric project, in Dayville, using diverted water from the Five Mile River, produces electricity which is sold to Connecticut consumers through the EcoWatt program of the Connecticut Energy Co-op.
