Frequent Flyers and Natural Cycles
Insecurity at Airports
Airline pilots, flight attendants, first class passengers and frequent flyers aren't just annoyed—they are angry. They don't like it one bit that are being treated like plain old ordinary passengers. The pilots and attendants who get paid to fly are particularly upset that at long last they are treated no better than those who pay to fly; apparently, they are not happy to be reduced to a level of those they are to paid to serve. Security checks are imperfect. Everyone wishes they were not necessary, but they are. They are intended to save lives and likely have discouraged many a would-be terrorist from boarding a plane. As time goes on, the security process will be refined and improved. Wearing a uniform—official or fake—does not and should not give anyone the opportunity to avoid being screened for weapons or explosives. Warning—Global Cooling? Those who for several decades have made a living collecting contributions to save our planet from global warming are getting worried; they may have to find an honest, scientifically sound way to earn a living. A recent article in the journal Science reports on a study of ancient tree rings. The report concludes that in the period 800 to 1,000 years ago, warming trends closely matched the warming trends of the 20th century. This indicates, according to one of the authors of the article, that "there are processes within the earth's natural climate system to produce large changes that might be viewed as comparable to what we have seen in the 20th century." When you take that study and combine it with the fact that 98% of Antarctica has been cooling over the last four decades, and that during that time its ice sheets have been growing at a rate of 27 billion tons a year—well, it appears that instead of getting rid of your SUV, it might be just as practical to throw away your fridge. Have a nice cool summer, but if it feels hot, it's only nature going through its natural cycle. |
