In Celebration of Butterflies
     Papillon, Motyl, Schmetterling, Babatchka, Mariposa … in whatever language you say it, it means "Butterfly!" Have you ever had trouble attracting these lovely creatures to your garden? Julie Marie Cavanaugh Honored
     Special Olympics Connecticut Board of Directors Chairman Joe Gugliotti (left) and ESPN personality Kenny Mayne (right) presented Special Olympics athlete Julie Marie Cavanaugh of Cornwall Bridge with the Spirit of Life Award at the Special Olympics Connecticut 2002 Hall of Fame dinner on March 19. Created in 1982, the Spirit of Life pays tribute to the Special Olympics athletes in Connecticut and their accomplishments both on and off the field.

Barkhamsted Historical Society Flea Market
     The Barkhamsted Historical Society sponsors a one-day Huge Flea Market on Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Mallory Brook Plaza (in front of Ames) on Route 44 in Winsted; early bird buying runs from 8-9 a.m. Rain date is Sunday, June 9.

Connecticut River Raft Race
     The 28th annual Connecticut River Raft Race and Charity Benefit on Saturday, August 3 starts at 10 a.m. from the blue railroad bridge in Middletown (approx. 100 yards south of Arigoni Bridge on Route 66). The race ends 4.1 nautical miles downriver at the shallows of Dart Island State Park. Pre-race, the hub of activities will be Riverside Marina, 37 Riverview St. in Portland, from which the majority of participants will launch their vessels. A party follows the race at river-access-only Dart Island, where there will be awards, entertainment (a live band), volleyball, picnicking, and great fun and merriment.

Sculpture at Noble Horizons
     Twenty-eight pieces of sculpture in bronze, steel, marble, copper, limestone, wood and plaster have come from California, Wyoming, Mississippi, Canada, Boston, New York City, and the tri-state area in preparation for the June 2 opening of Sculpture at Noble Horizons (SNH). The outdoor sculpture show has drawn thousand of visitors to the park-like grounds of the Salisbury retirement village over the past three years.

Quilting Programs at CT Historical Society
     Think back to a cold winter night of your youth. Then your mother entered the room, observed the scene and quickly walked back out—only to return a few minutes later. Just then your mother steps closer and drapes your grandmother's quilt around your shoulders and instantly the familiar aroma of your grandmother's perfume fills the air. You felt yourself relax and you knew you were home.

Science Center and Historical Society Form Partnership
     Ever since the Yankee traveled south to peddle nutmegs over 200 years ago, our state has been known for its ingenuity and genius. Connecticut's talent for creativity and tinkering has led to inventions ranging from the cotton gin and the helicopter to typewriters and even the Frisbee.
