Katie Atkins Benefit to Support the Jimmy Fund
On Saturday, June 8, there will be a pig roast and cookout in honor of Katie Atkins at Maasser Park, Route 44 in Colebrook to benefit the Jimmy Fund. The Jimmy Fund Clinic is part of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, and it is where Katie goes once every three weeks for treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (A.L.L.). Katie was diagnosed with this type of cancer on July 10, 2001—a day we will never forget. Today, Katie has an 85% prognosis for recovery and she is doing well, but it has been a long road for Katie over the last year.

On Fuel Cells and Windmills …
In 1980, the engineering team I worked with (under Energy Department contract) delivered a fuel cell to Sandia National Labs. It was installed in a two-seat compact auto prototype. The fuel cell worked fine. The auto worked fine, except for low range. With a tank of twice the volume and ten times the weight compared to a gasoline tank for the same size auto, the hydrogen at 200 atmospheres pressure provided 40 miles highway and 25 miles city per tank. They tried liquid hydrogen. This got better range, but the higher weight degraded acceleration and hill-climbing performance. This could have been offset by a bigger fuel cell, but that would have reduced the range. Besides, liquid hydrogen incurred constant loss due to boil-off venting (with concurrent flame hazards) and raised a big question, "Would you trust a gas pump jockey to fill your car with liquid hydrogen?"

Now the Aftermath of September 11
This week, ceremonies are being held at the World Trade Center site, marking the formal end of the recovery aftermath of this terrorist "atrocity." Edward T. Linenthal, Professor of Religion and American Culture at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, used the term "atrocity" at a panel discussion in Manhattan on May 1, under the auspices of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma and New York University. Professor Linenthal, author of a book on the Oklahoma City bombing, The Unfinished Bombing—Oklahoma City in American Memory, emphasized that what happened to the World Trade Center was an "atrocity," and not a "tragedy." He also decried "closure" as a "horrendous term."

Thank Your Food Placement Coordinator
It all started years ago when a comedian decided a housewife should be called a "domestic goddess" or "domestic engineer." It was her way of drawing attention to the true value of the job. How often do people look down upon others who have what they consider to be lesser jobs? Recently a grinder store advertised that they wanted "sandwich artists." Why not?
