It’s Getting Harder to Pay Our Taxes

This is to inform voters in Winsted that I will not be working at the budget referendum on Saturday, June 1.
By Susan R. Mahoney, Winsted

But I want voters to know that as a senior citizen and lifelong resident of Winsted, it is getting harder and harder to pay the high taxes that Republican selectmen keep giving us. This is the sixth year of such tax increases; this year the increase is over 9%.

The elderly, the disabled, and low-income families, who are trying to raise a couple of children, put a roof over their heads, food on the table and clothes on their backs while paying all the other bills and a mortgage, cannot afford these increases in taxes. Several businesses have left the town this year, and only CVS has come in. Businesses are tired of the heavy tax burden as well. But the Republican-controlled board of selectmen can afford these taxes because of their fat incomes.

Voters and property owners can vote on Saturday, June 1 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pearson School. Absentee ballots are available at the Town Clerk's office, or call the Town Clerk for an application. I pray that you will vote NO on June 1 against higher taxes.
