In the Public Interest Marketing Bad Food
     Dr. Roberto J. Gonzalez, an anthropologist who teaches at San Jose State University, recently completed a study entitled "Latino Overweight and Obesity: Marketing Disease to Minorities." Among his findings are that "Immigrants once came to the U.S. and watched their children grow taller and stronger. Today many come and watch their children grow fatter and weaker." One of his explanations is that immigrants' children adopt diets laden with fats and sugars and a more sedentary life.

This Raggie Loves Her Litter
     How times have changed. Years ago there was a group of people in northwestern Connecticut who were referred to as "raggies." They existed in little cabins and tarpaper shacks tucked away in mountain coves. A typical raggie farm was a half acre of land, the rest nature. They lived in squalor, intermarried (when they married at all), and a dozen men, women and children were often crowded in a two-room shack. Cider brandy was usually the choice of beverage for all, and the women usually had one child a year. The raggies were self-sufficient, though their life style was frowned upon by other more "acceptable" people.

Amateur Radio Field Day at Johnnycake Airport
     Hundreds of American amateur radio operators, or "hams," will work around the clock during the weekend of June 22-23 to set up field radio communication stations, get on the air, and contact thousands of other operators in the U.S., Canada, South America and the Caribbean as part of participation in the American Radio Relay League's annual Field Day.

Volunteers Needed to Monitor the Naugatuck River
     Litchfield County Soil and Water Conservation District holds a Naugatuck River Streamwalk Volunteer Training at the UConn Torrington campus, 843 University Dr. in Torrington and at Sunnybrook State Park on Saturday, June 29 from 8:30 a.m.-noon. Spend a fun morning on the river with a team of volunteers. You will learn how to survey the health of the river, and the important data you collect will be used for many projects to preserve and improve fish habitat.

     On Sunday, June 30, Ralph Nader will bring his "People Have the Power Tour" to the New Haven Coliseum to support public financing of campaigns, worker’s rights, corporate reform, environmental protection, living wages and single-payer health care in Connecticut.
