Clemance Gregory Exhibit at Wisdom House

Clemance Gregory of Bantam will be the featured artist in the Marie Louise Trichet Gallery at Wisdom House, 229 East Litchfield Rd. in Litchfield from July 13 through October 12. "Recent Work: Prints and Horses" will include prints, paintings and drawings by this well-known artist.

Mr. Gregory attended the California School of Fine Arts and then studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, France. He joined other abstract expressionists in New York during the ‘50s and then gradually developed more figurative work during the ‘60s. He has lived in Connecticut with his artist-wife, Alida Berling, since the 1960s.

His work has been exhibited worldwide: in Paris at the Musée d'Art Moderne; in Bilbao, Spain; and in numerous galleries in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and Connecticut.

Mr. Gregory refers to his work as "contemporary mythology." His paintings, he explained, have a strong accent on horses, both symbolic and serial. "I put the show together like an eclectic book," he said. "This gives the mind a little exercise. Life is so rich; you're jumping around all the time. I continue adding to the soup like French cooking; if it gets too rich, then I go back to basics." Some of the works also include images of fish, Mr. Gregory explained, which allow him to integrate concepts of evolution into his work.

"Everyone is responsible for our mythology and as much as they live it, our lives become richer," he explained. His works prompt personal inquiry into the possibilities of life and can be viewed as a renaissance of imagery and ideas.

There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, July 13 from 1-3 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For more info call 860-567-3163, or visit <www.wisdomhouse.org>.
