Don’t Forget the Little Things
The Friends of Main Street group is busily looking at big projects to enhance the looks of downtown Winsted. They seem to have forgotten the little things that could be done today for very little money. Store owners should wash their windows inside and out. Who wants to eat in a restaurant or pizza parlor with dingy windows? It doesn’t give you or other potential customers much confidence in the quality of the store or food. Many of these dirty windows are in the western part of Main Street. When you drive by Richard's Jewelry store, it has class. The windows sparkle, it looks neat, and the building appears as if someone cares. Wouldn't if be nice if more of the stores would follow suit? Another enhancement would be to pull the weeds out of the sidewalks in front of your stores and also from the areas around the trees. Give the sidewalks a sweep, but don't sweep the dirt into the road as I have seen some shopkeepers do. All you are doing is moving the clutter from one place to another. Pick up the dirt and put it in the trash containers. We may be a poor town, but we don't have to look like slobs until improvement projects start. Have some pride in your businesses and the town. It just might attract tourists and locals to your stores and restaurants. Certainly gaudy, carnival paint colors won't do it. |
