The Winsted Rumor Mill

By Joe Cadrain, Winsted

The United States Supreme Court recently ruled that government-funded school voucher programs are constitutional. This to me was glorious news, because I feel that children can now escape the failed school monopoly called Public Education. It appears that this has caused panic in the Town of Winchester.

Shortly after the Supreme Court ruling, a public education political group began attending school board meetings to make complaints concerning rumors of the day. The first arrogant as well as corrosive public comment session concerned the rumor that the school board was going to close the Alternate School. No one I know of on the Board of Education wanted to close down the existing school, and I know because I serve on that board. What we opposed was being asked to approve a last-minute extravagant plan to change our alternate education plan and move the new Alternate School into an ostentatious new building.

The questions are: Who started and spread this rumor, and what purpose did the rumor serve? Keep in mind that while the bells were clanging, a new location was found for the existing Alternate School. When the plan was presented, the board agreed without conflict to support the move.

The second rumor was that the school board was going to fire their superintendent. Again the rumor was completely false, and to our amazement we then received a letter from our superintendent stating she was planning to leave. As always, everything is subject to change. Have a nice day.
