John Morris Opposes St. Lawrence Cement Plant John Morris Opposes St. Lawrence Cement Plant John Morris, Republican candidate for State Representative in the 64th House District (which includes Cornwall, Goshen, Sharon, Salisbury and part of Torrington) has announced his opposition to a proposed cement factory in Greenport, NY. The proposed plant is only 22 miles from Connecticut. Morris said, "I am opposed to this plant as it will have a negative impact on the citizens of northwest Connecticut. The potential of 20 million pounds of pollutants going into the air each year and heading directly into our region is not acceptable. I am tired of other states dumping pollution into Connecticut." Morris attended meetings on the St. Lawrence cement factory in February in Falls Village and just recently in Salisbury. Morris said he wrote Commissioner Erin Crotty of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in February to ask her to renotice the permit St. Lawrence has filed. In addition, Morris has written New York Governor George Pataki, Connecticut Governor John Rowland and Senators Dodd and Lieberman to ask them to join in efforts to oppose the plant. Morris said, "I encourage all concerned citizens in northwestern Connecticut to write New York and Connecticut state officials in opposition to this plant, to sign petitions and donate money to the Hudson Valley Preservation Coalition." |
