Perspectives from Psychotherapy on the Year Since 9/11 "The Year Since 9/11: Perspectives from the World of Psychotherapy" will be the subject of a lecture by Dr. Ruth Jaffe on Thursday, September 12 at 7 p.m. at the Gunn Memorial Library, 5 Wykeham Rd. in Washington. During her talk, Dr. Jaffe will discuss coping strategies and give new insights into the healing process following trauma, drawing on clinical vignettes and personal experience. Through discussion with the audience, Dr. Jaffe will address mental health needs and the consequences of stress in the wake of communal tragedy Dr. Jaffe holds a postdoctoral degree in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis from New York University. Her professional experience encompasses many years of teaching and research in both medical and academic institutions in New York (Columbia University, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Barnard College and City University of New York). She has held grants from the National Institutes of Health to conduct investigations into aspects of human perception and brain-behavior correlations, and has numerous publications on this topic as well as on clinical issues in psychotherapy. Since 1974, Jaffe has been in private practice with adults and couples, and also supervises doctoral students in their work with clinic patients. Having grown up in Argentina, Jaffe is fluent in several languages, and she has particular interest and expertise in crosscultural aspects of development, communication, and responses to trauma and stress. She has made mind-body connectedness a focal priority in her treatment of anxiety and depression, and more and more has involved herself in exploration of physical-psychological interactions in emotional health. In addition, she has specialized in women's issues across the life span and the psychology of chronic disease and of aging.
