Seven Angels Theatre

, Plank Rd in Waterbury presents "GUYS AND DOLLS" on Friday and Saturday, September 13-14 at 8 p.m.; and Sunday, September 15 at 2 p.m. This rousing musical comedy is based on Damon Runyon’s short story, "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown." The play revolves around Nathan Detroit, the organizer of the established permanent floating crap game in New York, who bets fellow gambler Sky Masterson that he cannot make the next girl he sees fall in love with him. The stage is set for a hilarious evening of complications when that girl turns out to be a pure-at-heart Salvation Army-type reformer, Miss Sarah Brown. Musical selections include well-loved songs such as "Bushel and a Peck," "Fugue for Tinhorns," "I’ll Know" and "If I Were a Bell." , 233 Pearl St. in Hartford presents "SPINNING INTO BUTTER" through October 6; show times are Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Set in a small college campus in Vermont, "Spinning Into Butter" examines the dangers of both racism and political correctness in America today. When one of the few African-American students at liberal Belmont College begins receiving hate mail, the campus erupts, first with shock, then with mutual recrimination as faculty and students alike try to prove their own tolerance by condemning one another. , Route 7 in Sheffield presents the CELEBRATE SHEFFIELD FARMS ART SHOW on Friday, September 13 from 4-7 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Artists have been painting local farms and farm-related subjects on Monday mornings for the past few months, and the paintings have been organized by the Sheffield Land Trust and the Sheffield Art League. Using a variety of media and techniques, Carol Moore infuses her paintings with high energy and vibrant color, applying her eclectic style to a wide range of subjects including nostalgic memories of New Mexico; her work in on display in collections throughout the United States. On display in the lobby is a collection of bronze pieces created by the Wild Goose Studio in County Cork, Ireland, and provided by the Grotto Gift Shop at Lourdes of Litchfield; drawing on mythology, symbols and stories, these works are designed to stimulated the imagination of the viewer. Booklist’s synopsis states: "It will take a miracle to save St. Cecilia’s, the Catholic Church in the small Connecticut town of Dorsetville. The town has fallen on hard times since the woolen mills shut down, and the church, an ornate relic of more prosperous days, serves just a handful of parishioners. sponsors A MEMOIR OF A MEMOIR on Saturday, September 14 at 5 p.m. at Sharon Center School, 80 Hilltop Rd. in Sharon. Frank McCourt, author of "Angela’s Ashes" and "‘Tis," will be present this lecture. Mr. McCourt was born in Brooklyn and moved with his family to Ireland at the age of 4. "Angela’s Ashes," a wrenching account of his impoverished boyhood in Limerick, won him a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award. The memoir was made into a 1999 motion picture starring Emily Watson as Mr. McCourt’s self-sacrificing mother and Robert Carlyle as his feckless, hard-drinking father. "‘Tis," a sequel to "Angela’s Ashes," follows McCourt from his return to America at 19 through the Army and New York University, to his eventual success as a creative writing teacher at Stuyvesant High School in New York City. Mr. McCourt will sign copies of his books in the school lobby. Tickets for the lecture are $20 adults, $10 children (ages 9-14). presents a talk on THE BERKSHIRES AND THE BEGINNING OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR by researcher-writer Ray Raphael on Sunday, September 15 at 3 p.m. at Herman Melville’s Arrowhead, Holmes Rd. in Pittsfield. Raphael is the author of "The First American Revolution: Before Lexington and Concord," in which he argues that the Revolution actually began in the late summer of 1774, more than six months before "the shot heard 'round the world."
