Contribute to Malawi Famine Relief

Hunger: We can survive its discomforts, but starvation is a matter of life and death.

Three million East Africans in the country of Malawi have lived in starvation since July 2002. They counted on their crops of soy and maize for physical nourishment and the crops did not grow this year. Periods of drought and floods destroyed all the plantings. People are starving and dying due to this famine. The situation is compounding an already disastrous health situation with illness and deaths from HIV/ AIDS. The worst is yet to come.

The Daughters of Wisdom, who minister at Wisdom House in Litchfield, have sisters who serve in schools and hospitals in Malawi. These sisters confirm that the famine is very serious. Although many relief agencies are sending food to Malawi, the Daughters of Wisdom of the United States Province have organized a collection of funds to bring more food into Malawi. The project is coordinated by Sister Rosemarie Greco, DW, Director of Wisdom House. Included among the famine victims are Daughters of Wisdom and Montfort Fathers, who have maintained a presence in the country since 1904.

According to Sr. Rosemarie, a donation of $15 will supply food (corn and soy) to a family of six for one month. With the country's population of three million, there are approximately 500,000 units of six people. The need is obvious—over $7 million is needed for each month of the famine.

During harvest time in the United States, the Daughters of Wisdom are asking people to contribute to famine relief. The sisters have international contacts who will ensure that all funds go directly to the Malawi people. Donations can be sent to: Wisdom House/ Malawi Famine, 229 East Litchfield Rd., Litchfield, CT 06759. For more info call Sr. Rosemarie at 860-567-3163.
