Cemetery Documentation in Farmington

Cemetery Documentation in Farmington

The Stanley-Whitman House, a living history center in Farmington, was the beneficiary of the Capitol Area United Way’s "Day of Caring" on September 5. A total of 60 volunteers cheerfully documented more than 300 gravestones dating back to the 1700s and 1800s in Memento Mori, Farmington’s oldest graveyard. The cemetery documentation project got a boost with so many volunteers graciously donating their time and talents in reading and trying to decipher worn-away script lettering on the gravestones. Volunteers from companies such as United Technologies, Aetna, Hartford Life, ING Financial Services and Cigna Corporation spent several hours documenting the engravings on the gravestones.

The aim of the cemetery documentation project is to make the valuable historical information from Memento Mori available to researchers online, in a searchable database, and in hard copy at local libraries and historical agencies. Thanks again to all of those who gave of their time to help preserve the history of Farmington. If you are interested in documenting some of the gravestones, call Stanley-Whitman House at 860-677-9222.
