The Fantasticks in Cornwall A rare treat is in store for theater devotees on Saturday, October 5 at 3 p.m. in Cornwall's United Church of Christ, when director Jean Leich and pianist Anne Chamberlain will present a concert version of The Fantasticks, the world's longest-running musical show, arranged especially for this occasion by the author himself, Tom Jones of West Cornwall. "It began just as a gleam in the eye back in January, when The Fantasticks closed after an unbroken record of almost 42 years and 17,162 performances," according to Ms. Leich, "and then it all came together when I called Tom last spring with our proposal for a Cornwall tribute to him and to his wonderful show, which had been such a crowd-pleaser." The result is a selection of scenes and songs from the original production, introduced by Cornwall artist Marc Simont and performed by Nick Jacobs, Laura Kirk and John Miller, all of Cornwall, as well as Gregory Zabielski of Torrington and Matt Blinstrubas of Prospect. The show will close with an informal talk by Mr. Jones, recalling highlights of his career in musical theater. Questions from the audience are encouraged, and children are welcome. A reception for author and cast will follow in the UCC parish house. This unique performance will benefit the Cornwall Library Endowment Fund. Suggested contributions at the door are $10 for adults, $5 for children (under 12); for more info call John Leich at 860-672-6193. |
