Thursday, October 17

WINSTED

: The Gilbert School holds conferences for all parents from 6-8:30 p.m. in an attempt to better inform them of their child’s academic progress midway through the marking period. All parents are urged to attend, but a special plea is being made to parents of freshmen and students who have had academic difficulties in the past. Teachers will be available in their classrooms for 5- to 10-minute conferences; a list of teachers and their rooms will be posted throughout the school (consult with your son or daughter regarding his or her teachers). Any parent who wishes to speak to a teacher but is unable to attend may call the school at 379-8521 and leave a message. BURLINGTON

: Child Care Infoline and the CT Dept. of Public Health host an Early Childhood Career and Resource Fair from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Naugatuck Valley Community College, 750 Chase Parkway. The fair is geared toward individuals interested in early care and education as a career, as well as those already working in the field. There will be information about nutrition, first aid certification, administration of medication, health and safety, liability insurance and fingerprinting, as required by licensing. NORTHFIELD

: Northfield Volunteer Fire Company, 12 Main St. holds a Breakfast from 7:30-11 a.m. The regular menu includes all the pancakes you can eat, sausage, coffee and juice for $4; French toast, eggs and home fries will also be available. : Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will be held for the residents of Canaan, Colebrook, Cornwall, Goshen, Hartland, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon and Torrington at the Torrington Water Pollution Control Plant on Bogue Rd. Items such as oil-based paints and stains, turpentine, pesticides, herbicides, household cleaners, hobby supplies, 20-lb. propane tanks, and fluorescent bulbs will be accepted. Residents may also turn in mercury thermometers and receive a free digital thermometer in exchange.
