Leaf and Yard Waste Pickup in Torrington Leaf and yard waste pickup for Torrington residents will begin on Monday, October 28. Pickup is scheduled to continue until Friday, December 6, providing we do not have any major snowstorms prior to that date. Only leaves and yard waste bagged in biodegradable paper bags (which can be purchased at many local stores) or tied into bundles not exceeding three feet in their greatest dimension will be picked up. Single tree limbs shall not exceed three feet in length or three inches in diameter. Bagged leaves, bundles or limbs should not exceed 50 pounds in weight. Residents are advised not to rake leaves or yard waste into piles curbside. Leaves and yard waste must be placed curbside for pickup on the same day as garbage pickup; please do not call to schedule pickup. Yard waste includes horticultural trimmings and other natural organic matter, such as grass clippings, discarded from yards or gardens. Bagged yard waste shall not include stones, dirt, and sharp objects. Residents are reminded that leaves and grass trimmings are a recyclable material and cannot be picked up as part of our normal curbside collection and disposal program. Take advantage of our spring and fall cleanups to properly dispose of these items. Grass clippings can be easily managed during the growing season by removing grass catchers on mowers and leaving the clippings on the lawn. Grass clippings are 80% water and decompose quickly. Clippings also act as a natural fertilizer, returning nitrogen and other nutrients to the lawn. |
