Chorale to Perform Puccini in Christmas Concert

Members of the Farmington Valley Chorale were surprised when it was announced that they would be singing Messa di Gloria by Giacomo Puccini. "We thought Puccini only wrote major operas like Madame Butterfly and Tosca," they exclaimed. They were surprised to learn that Puccini came from four generations of family who specialized in sacred music. This piece was written when he was 18 to celebrate the tradition of his family and as a graduation thesis from the Institute Musicale of Lucca, Italy. The melodic, imposing composition was laid aside as Puccini explored the form of opera and was only rediscovered in 1951.

The Chorale began in 1970 as part of the Town of Simsbury’s 300th Anniversary celebration. Coming from all the choirs of churches in Simsbury, the group of almost 100 performed for over six months, after which many members of the group wished to remain a chorale group to serve the Farmington Valley community. Giving two major concerts a year with professional soloists and an orchestra, the Chorale has added to the rich musical life of the area.

The Farmington Valley Chorale presents this very special piece along with traditional carols of the season on Friday, December 13 at Valley Community Baptist Church, 590 West Avon Rd. in Avon. The Chorale will perform under the direction of Donald Smith of Burlington, with professional soloists Wayne Rivera and Howard Sprout, and orchestra. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, $5 students; for more info call 860-676-0587.
